Hunter Valley and Newcastle-Area Rhinoplasty and Ear Pinning Surgery
Prominent facial features such as the nose and ears dramatically affect a person’s appearance, and features that are disproportionate can be a source of insecurity for those with otherwise well-balanced features. Fortunately, the ears and nose can be reshaped using advanced plastic surgery techniques. In addition to other facial surgeries, Dr. John Newton’s patients from Australia’s Mid North Coast, Central Coast, and from around the Hunter Valley and Newcastle can take advantage of rhinoplasty and ear pinning (otoplasty) to improve the appearance of the nose and ears.
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a popular form of cosmetic surgery designed to correct the size, shape, and symmetry of a patient’s nose. The surgery can also be used to correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or some other structural abnormality. For many Newcastle and Hunter Valley-area patients, rhinoplasty opens the door to a new world of beauty and self-confidence.
When performing rhinoplasty, Dr. Newton will reshape the underlying bone and cartilage of the nose to meet the goals of the individual patient. If necessary, he may augment the natural tissue with artificial implants to create the desired look. The procedure is performed through discrete incisions at the base of the nose to minimize scarring.
When performed correctly, rhinoplasty should not impede breathing or negatively affect the structural integrity of the nose. However, care must be taken during the healing process to ensure that the nose is not injured, as even slight injury could create the need for revisional surgery. Patients will need to wear a protective splint on the nose for up to two weeks after rhinoplasty. Most patients will be able to return to all normal activities after about a month, but the final results of the procedure will not be reached for up to three months.
Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)
Ear pinning is one of the few cosmetic surgery procedures that can be performed on young children. Many concerned parents choose ear pinning so that their children will not be teased at school, but the procedure can also be performed on adults. Using advanced surgical techniques, Dr. Newton can correct ears that protrude too far from the head, are oversized, or appear asymmetrical.
During ear pinning surgery, Dr. Newton reshapes the cartilage through a discreet incision behind the ear. If needed, he can close the incision in a way that brings the ear closer to the side of the head so that it does not protrude as much. In some cases, the cartilage need not be altered at all because stitches and sutures are sufficient to reshaping the ear.
One of the chief advantages of ear pinning is that it entails a shorter recovery time than most cosmetic surgical procedures. Patients need to wear protective compression bandages for up to two weeks; these bandages promote quick healing and help to ensure optimal results. Though some minor swelling may persist, patients at Dr. Newton’s Newcastle-area practice who undergo ear pinning typically see significant benefits from the surgery as soon as bandages are removed.
